Project Notes: WMET Station Launch

WMET, broadcast in the Washington DC Beltway, made things interesting when they asked us to create audience awareness for a new radio station nobody had ever heard of. And we had eight weeks to do it on a limited budget.

No Problem. SchneiderCreative knows how to stretch a budget. And we’re experienced problem solvers who respond quickly, trusting our instincts and not afraid to take a risk.

To make it work WMET was positioned as the “Smart” alternative between NPR and “Shock Radio”. To be memorable we took a slightly irreverent humorous tone to make grab the public’s attention. Our media team decided that Outdoor Bus Backs, Newspaper Print Ads and 15 second TV spots would be the most effective media to reach out audience quickly.

The Outdoor Ads used bright colors and tight character headshots that paid off the headlines. WMET. Brand took shape we developed the launch tag line: “Talk Radio For The Rest of Us”

We used humor to continue the concept in a series of print ads in the major newspapers.

We shot five15 second “bookend” TV spots (with narrations by the on-air talent) and did the post-production – all in one week. The spots aired on local cable networks shortly after the Bus backs and Print Ads had been put into play.

The strategy worked: WMET 1160 evolved to become.
